Meclizine (Motion Sickness)

Overview

Motion sickness affects roughly one-third of the general population and up to 70% of passengers in rough sea conditions, according to the CDC Yellow Book. Symptoms — including nausea, dizziness, cold sweats, and vomiting — result from conflicting signals between the eyes, inner ear, and body.

Meclizine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the vestibular system that regulate balance and nausea perception. Compared to older antihistamines like dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), Meclizine causes less sedation and has a longer duration of action — up to 24 hours per dose.

The CDC includes antihistamines like Meclizine as a recommended option for motion sickness prevention. It's typically taken 1 hour before departure. For extended boat or cruise travel, it can be taken once daily throughout the trip.
